SDUFE-Dalhousie Joint Program for Undergraduates majoring in Statistics

 

I. Introduction of partner institutions

 

Dalhousie University, founded in 1818, is one of Canada's oldest universities. It is also a comprehensive, research-oriented university that combines with the excellent academic tradition and innovative consciousness. As one of the 13 key scientific research universities in Canada, the university was rated as one of the top ten key universities in Canada by Maclean’s, a famous Canadian education magazine. In 2011, it was also ranked in the top 200 of the London Times HES Global University. The university has 3 campuses, 11 schools and more than 3,700 courses, providing 125 professional degrees at three levels from undergraduate, graduate to doctoral involving 180 teaching and research fields, including humanities, science and engineering, management, computer science, engineering, architecture, law, medicine, etc. There are more than 1,000 professors now in the school, 92% of the professors have doctoral degrees, and 52 of them are the chief experts of Canadian scientific research. The school's annual research fund and bonuses amount to 150 million Canadian dollars, which is the top research university in Canada. Among the more than 100,000 graduates of the school, there are 3 heads of state of Canada, 6 provincial governors and the first female astronaut to go to space, and 86 recipients of the Rhodes Scholar Award, which has trained a large number of well-known scholars and outstanding Talent.

The statistics major under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University is the school’s dominant major, with an average of 35 undergraduates enrolled each year. The curriculum covers the professional directions of statistics and applied statistics, including probability and statistical inference, linear regression model, data analysis, time series, multivariate statistical analysis, Bayesian methods and data mining. The Bachelor of Science degree program is accredited by the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC). The statistical project course is certified by the Canadian Accounting Union, and you can apply for an applied statistician directly after completing the course. Dalhousie University has a strong faculty of mathematics and Statistics, with 10 lifetime faculty members in the direction of statistics. Teachers have cooperated with Statistics Canada, the International Ocean Tracking Network, the Genomics and Evolutionary Bioinformatics Center, and others. At present, three research teams have been set up by teachers majoring in statistics: the first team focuses on genomics, bioinformatics and statistical genetics; the second team focuses on environmental statistics and modeling; the third group focuses on modern statistical computing methods, including statistical data mining, machine learning, Bayesian computing and data science. Among them, Professor Joanna Flemming is a national Marine data tracking expert with outstanding achievements in national Marine tracking research and an academic authority in this field.

II. Project introduction

 

According to notice No.7 [2020] of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, Shandong University of Finance and Economics and Dalhousie University in Canada jointly approved the undergraduate education program for statistics in March 2020. The project approval number is MOE37CA2A20193037N.

 

1. Talent training objectives

 

This project aims to introduce foreign high-quality education resources and advanced teaching concepts, cultivate a professional statistical professional with an international perspective and innovative awareness of applied interdisciplinary qualities who support the party's basic line; comprehensive development of moral, intellectual and physical beauty, master the basic theory and knowledge of mathematics, statistics and other related disciplines; possess the use of modern statistical methods and big data Processing technology, the ability to use computer software to process and analyze data, can proficiently use Chinese/English bilingual services for various Chinese and foreign institutions and government enterprises; engaged in data collection and processing, data mining analysis, big data application development, data visualization, etc.

 

2. Cooperation mode and degree

 

As one of all undergraduate majors in Shandong University of Finance and Economics, this project enrolls students through the national unified college entrance examination. After completing the total credits of the courses and the credits required for each module in the teaching plan, the project students will receive the undergraduate graduation certificate of Science issued by Shandong University of Finance and Economics and the course certificate issued by Dalhousie University. Students can voluntarily choose to study at Dalhousie University in the next two years. Those who complete the second two years of study and meet the requirements of bachelor degree conferring conditions will award the undergraduate degree of both universities

 

3. Project advantages and features

 

(1) Innovate the working mechanism of Party building. Focusing on the fundamental task of establishing morality, strengthen the ideological and political education of Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run schools students, attaches great importance to the Chinese-foreign cooperation-run schools' party construction, the implementation of the department, the Ministry of Education "Notice on Strengthening the Construction of Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools in Universities" adhere to the synchronous planning of party building, synchronous setting of party organization, and synchronous development of party work; adhere to the integration of professional education and ideological and political education, implement the three-holistic education mechanism, and promote the healthy development of Sino-foreign cooperative education projects.

(2) The cooperation major meets the needs. The construction of this project adapts to the development trend of the era of the integration of statistics and big data science, conform to the old and the new kinetic energy conversion project in Shandong province "top ten" industry's need for related personnel, with economic and social development of Shandong province on large data science, statistics and other relevant personnel requirements, filling the gap in the international talent shortage, to a certain extent.

(3) Interdisciplinary knowledge integration. The project teachers, teaching materials and curriculum of the project are closely integrated with foreign educational resources, which is conducive to training students to establish a knowledge structure system that integrates Chinese and Western cultures. Curriculum design showing the combination of Chinese cultural characteristics and internationalization; consolidating the foundation of mathematics and statistics; the intersection of statistics, data science and big data technology; theoretical teaching and field training/practice courses complement each other.

(4) Strong faculty. Shandong University of Finance and Economics has one national excellent teacher, two famous teachers in Shandong Province, one young Taishan scholar in Shandong Province, and two young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Shandong Province. There are 66 full-time teachers, 19 professors and 28 associate professors. There are 36 master supervisors, 11 doctoral supervisors, and 51 doctoral teachers. They have strengths in economic statistics, financial statistics and risk management, big data technology and other fields. The Department of Statistics of Dalhousie University has a teaching and research team with rich teaching experience and high academic level, among which 10 have doctorates from internationally renowned universities. In addition, she has strong academic leaders in bioinformatics statistics, environmental statistics and modeling research, statistical machine learning and big data analysis algorithm, modern computer technology application and big data application, and has high teaching level and scientific research ability.

(5) The two sides have a solid foundation for cooperation. The two universities have cooperated since 2006 and has a solid foundation. In 2011, the undergraduate education program of Economics major approved by the Ministry of Education and cooperated with the university (approval number MOE37CA2A20111189N) has cultivated a large number of high-quality innovative talents with international vision and competitiveness. The cooperation between the two schools actively facilitated the signing of the friendly cooperative relationship agreement between Shandong Province and Nova Scotia. It is a model of educational exchange between the two provinces, and has actively promoted the exchange and cooperation between the two provinces, and realized the all-round cooperation between the government and the society promoted by education.
